ICSE 2025 is pleased to put a focus on sustainability and environmental consciousness.
IEEE Computer Society Sustainability Initiative
ICSE 2025 is part of the IEEE Computer Society Sustainability Initiative
Sustainability at the Rogers Centre
The Rogers Centre, our venue, has numerous initiatives for sustainability, including in its food production, waste management and architecture.
In particular the Rogers Centre states: “we’re committed to reducing food waste and supporting our community through our partnership with La Tablée des Chefs. Surplus food from our events is safely collected and redistributed to the Ottawa Mission as well as other organizations, ensuring that edible food reaches those in need. By participating in this food recovery program, we proudly contribute to the fight against food insecurity while reducing our environmental footprint. Together, we track the impact of our efforts, measuring both the portions donated and our contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Carbon Neutrality
$7 from each registration will go towards planting trees to ensure the conference is carbon neutral (including covering the carbon emitted by those travelling to the conference. TCSE will also be matching this with $3 for each attendee, for a total of $10. We will be planting trees through One Tree Planted.
Waste Reduction
In addition to waste reduction initiatives by the venue, we are going to be contacting all registrants in late February or early March with a number of questions, and one of them will be to ask if they prefer not to receive the customary gifts (e.g. tote bag bag, water bottle, etc.,) to reduce waste.
We will be producing only a limited number of banners and other decorative items that would have to be thrown away at the end of the conference.
Travel Impact Reduction
The conference venue is situated right in the centre of the city, on the light rail line (that can be used to travel to and from the airport or train station), with all booked hotels and our reception venue in walkable distance.
We have obtained discounts from VIA Rail (code provided on registration) to encourage people to use the train, rather than fly, if they are travelling from locations like Montreal, Quebec City, Kingston and Toronto.
Social and Individual Sustainability
ICSE 2025 has taken many steps to promote sustainability from a human perspective
- Childcare is free (registration was required)
- We worked with various agencies to support travel for various groups
- We are providing virtual attendance options through Zoom for those with valid reasons (medical, caregiving, visa denial, inability to return to home country if they leave it).
- There is a student mentoring workshop
- There is a newcomer reception to help new attendees feel welcome
- There are numerous events at breaks and lunch periods in the RCS Atrium area for people in various groups
- There is an LGBTQ lunch sponsored by Elsevier
- We are providing a quiet room (202) most of the week for people in the neurodiverse community (ADHD, Autism, and so on) who need to get away from excess stimulation. The main reception Terrace Level will also have an area without music.
- A prayer room (2A) is available throughout the conference.
- SIGSOFT CARES will be available to help focus on ensuring an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment, and to facilitate resolution and/or reporting of any issues
